Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. There are 6 million residents (2016). The capital is Freetown. In 1460, the Portuguese navigator Pedro de Sintra named the region of Sierra Leone, due to the impressive shapes of the mountains seen from the sea. In the 16th century, the Portuguese had already established factories in the region. England dominated Sierra Leone in the 18th century. Independence was achieved in 1961.
