Senegal is a country in West Africa, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. Its relief is low, in general, with an average elevation of 69 meters. The highest point is 581 m, in the southwest of the Kedougou region. There are 14.3 million residents (2016). The capital is Dakar. In the Middle Ages, Islam came to present-day Senegal. The Portuguese arrived in the 15th century and established factories on the coast. The French arrived in the 17th century and, in the 19th century, turned Senegal into a colony. Independence was achieved in 1960.
