Eritrea is an African country bathed by the Red Sea. The name comes from Mare Erythraeum, the Latin form of the Red Sea. There are 5.9 million residents (2016). The capital is Asmara. In the Middle Ages, Eritrea was dominated by the Arabs. It became Italian territory in 1890. In World War II, that territory came under British control. In 1952, it became an autonomous federated state together with Ethiopia, by decision of the UN. After many years of conflict with Ethiopia, Eritrea became an independent country in 1993.
