Throughout its history, the territory of Algeria was dominated by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs and Ottoman Turks, until it fell under the rule of France in the first half of the 19th century. In 1962, Algeria conquered its independence after many battles. There are 40 million residents (2015), 99% Muslim. The official language is Arabic and the capital is Algiers (Algiers). Other important cities are Oran, Annaba and Constantine.
