The Republic of Nauru is a tiny island country, with 21 km² in area and 30 km of coastline, bathed by the Pacific Ocean, just below the equator. There are 9.6 thousand residents. Parliament and government offices are in the Yaren District. In 1888, the Germans annexed the island of Nauru to their Marshall Islands protectorate. In the early 20th century, exploration of its phosphate deposits began. Australians occupied the Island during the First World War. Japan invaded Nauru during World War II, but returned to Australia’s control under the UN mandate after the war. Independence was achieved in 1968.
