Facing the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal has one of the most diverse and amazing cultures in Europe, with Arab vectors, German and Latin. Before emerging as one of the greatest empires in human history, in the first half of the 16th century, Portugal was dominated by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Germanic and Arab peoples. It was the Portuguese missions, off the coast of Brazil, that gave rise to the denominations America and New World. Both referred, originally, only to Brazil and the continuation of its territory until the Pacific coast, then unknown. Portugal today is a modern nation and part of the European Union.
