The Principality of Monaco is a small European country on the Mediterranean coast, with only 2 km² of area. Only smaller than the Vatican. In the 12th century, the area was a Genoese colony. In 1215, a fort was built on the site. In 1297, the Grimaldi family took control of the area. At the end of the 19th century, great prosperity came with the construction of a railway, linking Monaco to France, and the construction of a casino. Since then, it has been one of Europe’s top tourist destinations. Monaco is a constitutional monarchy. Since 1419, the head of state has been a prince of the Grimaldi family. It is one of the countries with the highest per capita income in the world.
