The Syrian Arab Republic is a country in the Middle East, bathed by the Mediterranean Sea. One of the cradles of human civilization. There are 17 million residents (2016). The capital is Damascus. Antiquity left several historical sites in the current territory of Syria, among the most important in the History of Humanity, such as Palmyra, Damascus and Aleppo. In the Middle Ages, Syria was dominated by Islam. Later, it was part of the Ottoman Empire. After the First World War, it became a French protectorate. Independence was achieved in 1946. Since 2011, Syria has been in civil war.
