Weather in Montenegro by Month

Montenegro is located in the west of the Balkan Peninsula. The area of the country is 13,812 km2. From the southwestern side, the state is washed by the Adriatic Sea and its Bay of Kotor. The central part of Montenegro is flat, and in the east there are mountain folding. The rivers of Montenegro are mountainous. Here is the second deepest canyon in the world (1200 m), formed by the Tara River. Also in this country is the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula, Lake Skadar. Montenegro is an “ecological country”: 41% of the area is covered by forests, 40% by pastures.

The north of Montenegro is characterized by a continental climate, and the Mediterranean coast of the Adriatic Sea. In mountainous areas, summers are moderately warm, winters are relatively cold and snowy. Precipitation increases closer to the coast. In the south of Montenegro, summers are long, hot and dry, and winters are short and cool.

From May to October in Montenegro is the height of the swimming season, and in winter ski holidays are popular here. The country is open for excursion programs all year round. January

In the ski resorts (Zabljak, Kolasin) the temperature during the day does not rise above 0°C. There are excellent conditions for ski holidays. Closer to the sea, in Cetinje, the daytime temperature is +6°C, at night it drops to -4°C. On the coast itself, the thermometer of the thermometer rises to + 13 ° С. And the water temperature is equal to the air temperature – + 13 ° С. Precipitation is observed in large quantities throughout the country.

February

In seaside resorts (Budva, Kotor, Bar), the air temperature is kept within + 13 ° С. The weather is rainy throughout. Up to 12 days with precipitation are recorded in Podgorica. The air temperature in the flat part of the country does not rise above +7°C. At ski resorts, the thermometer readings during daylight hours range from 0°С to +2°С. The stable snow cover makes this season popular for skiing.

March

In March, snow still lies in the mountains of Montenegro, and spring is already coming on the sea coast. The air temperature in Budva and Kotor rises above +15°C. The water temperature fluctuates within +14°С, it is still cool for swimming. At ski resorts, the temperature during the day is fixed at + 5 ° C, at night it drops below zero.

April

April is a popular time for excursions. On the coast of the Adriatic Sea, the daily temperature is +20°С. It is still quite cool at night, +9°C. Precipitation in April is not uncommon. Most of them are observed in Cetinje, where the thermometer readings do not rise above +12°C. At the ski resorts, the snow gradually melts, the air temperature in the daytime is + 10 ° C, and at night it no longer drops below zero.

May

The water temperature is +17°С…+18°С, the first daredevils appear to swim in the sea. The air warms up to +24°C, so you can already sunbathe on the beach. It is relatively cold in the mountains. In Zabljak, the daytime temperature does not exceed +13°C. Precipitation at this time of the year is observed throughout the country, but in Bar, Budva and Podgorica they are less.

June

In Herceg Novi, Ulcinj, Budva and other seaside resorts, temperatures of +25°C are recorded in June. The water in the sea warms up to +21°С. The beach season is officially open. In Podgorica, the thermometer readings during the daytime fluctuate within + 27 ° С. But in Cetinje it is worth taking warm clothes. Despite the sunny days, it gets cold here at night – the air temperature drops to +13°C.

July

In July it is cool only in the mountain resorts. In Zabljak, the temperature during the day is +19°C. Closer to the center and south is much warmer. In Cetinje, the daily temperature rises above +27°C. The hottest are the cities of the sea coast, where the thermometer reaches +29°С. At night the temperature drops to +21°С. The water in the sea warms up to +23°С…+24°С. Precipitation becomes short and infrequent.

August

Sea water in August warms up to +25°С. This is the peak of the beach season. The air temperature throughout Montenegro is stable within + 29 ° С. It is hottest in Kotor, +31°С, but comparatively more precipitation is recorded here than in other parts of the country. In Kolasin, the weather is also comfortable for excursions – the air temperature during the day is kept at around + 21 ° С.

September

September is the last month of a beach holiday. Although the water in the sea warms up to +23°C, the air temperature in the coastal resorts no longer rises above +26°C. In Cetinje, during the day, the thermometer shows + 23 ° С, at night – up to + 11 ° С. It gets colder at the mountain resorts too. In Zabljak, daily figures drop to +16°C. It doesn’t rain often, but it’s worth taking an umbrella.

October

The water in early October is still comfortable for swimming, +22°C, but gradually cools down by the end of the month. In Budva, Ulcinj, the air temperature in the daytime fluctuates between + 17 ° С… 19 ° С. In the mountainous regions, the thermometer readings no longer rise above +11°C during the day, and drop to +2°C at night. Rainfall is rising across the country.

November

In November, rainfall in Montenegro is a frequent occurrence. The air temperature in seaside resorts is +13°С…15°С. The water is cool, not higher than +17°С. Only in Podgorica the thermometer reaches +18°C during the day. The mountain resorts sometimes experience snowfalls. The air temperature in the daytime is fixed at around +3°C, at night it drops below zero.

December

December is the beginning of the ski season in Montenegro. The air temperature in the daytime in Kolasin and Zabljak is 0°C, and at night it drops to -6°C. 17 days with precipitation are recorded here. At other resorts, the air temperature barely reaches +9°C during the day, at night – no higher than +4°C. This time can be devoted to excursions that are held throughout the country.
