Weather in Hungary by Month

Hungary is located in the central part of Europe. The area of the state is 93 thousand km2. The main part of the territory is flat, since the country lies on the Middle Danube Plain. In the west, there are hills, the average height of which reaches 300 m, to the north of them there is the foothills of the Alps and the Carpathian spurs, and the east of the country is predominantly low. The northern regions are cut by caves with underground rivers. In the west is the largest thermal lake in Europe. Most of the land in Hungary is covered with orchards, vineyards and fields, 20% is forest cover.

Hungary has a continental climate. Summers are hot here, and winters, although cold, are mild. The amount of precipitation increases from east to west, from 450 mm to 900 mm. January

The average air temperature in January fluctuates between -1°С…-4°С. It is warmer in the capital, and cooler closer to the east. In the region of Lake Heviz, the temperature rarely drops below 0°C. More often the air here warms up to + 2 ° С… + 3 ° С. The sun rarely appears this month, about 8 days a month. In January, up to 32 mm of precipitation is recorded. February

In February, the sun appears, gloomy days gradually disappear. At the beginning of the month, the average air temperature in the country is fixed at +4°C, and at the end it reaches +10°C. At night, the thermometer also does not fall below 0°C. The weather is changeable – it is worth taking warm clothes in case of cold wind or frost. In February, there are 2-3 rainy days and up to 30 mm of precipitation falls.

March

In March, in the daytime, the thermometer rises to +11°С. In the capital, the air temperature is kept at around +10°C. The same weather is in Debrecen, Szeged. It is cooler in the northeast, in Miskolc. There, during the day, the air warms up only to + 8 ° С. The water temperature in the lakes fluctuates within +14°С. It is too early to swim in natural reservoirs, but the Szechenyi, Rudashe and Kirae baths, where the water is warmed up to + 23 ° C… 26 ° C, are already accepting tourists.

April

A wall of mountains protects Hungary from gusty winds from neighboring territories. The maximum wind speed at this time of the year is 6 m/s. The weather in April becomes more stable. On average, the air temperature during the day stays within +14°С…+16°С, and at night it drops to +5°С. The warmest weather is in Szeged and Pec. However, in Pec, more precipitation is recorded – 50 mm. They fall in a couple of days, the rest of the month is sunny.

May

May is characterized by the beginning of the long rainy season. More precipitation in the west, the east is relatively dry. In the central part drops out up to 55 mm. The average air temperature in the country ranges from +18°С to +21°С. It is cooler in the mountainous regions, where the thermometer readings do not rise above +15°C. In Budapest, the air temperature at night drops to +10°C, the same is observed in Szeged and Debrecen, and in Miskolc – up to +5°C.

June

At the beginning of summer, the air in Hungary warms up to +23°С…+24°С. By the end of June, these figures are growing. Tourists can be sure that this month the heat will not interfere with a comfortable stay. At night, the air temperature drops to +13°C. The water temperature in the lakes is at around +21°C, which allows you to open the swimming season. Humidity is gradually decreasing compared to previous months, but there are heavy rains (up to 63 mm).

July

July is the hottest month in Hungary and the peak tourist season. There are 450 hours of sunshine per month. The air temperature in Budapest, Dobrecen and Szeged reaches +28°С. The wettest region of Hungary is the slopes of the Bakony mountain system, and the driest region is the Danube river valley. The water temperature in the lakes is +25°С. The average wind speed throughout the country is 3-5 m/s, and air humidity reaches 80%.

August

In August, the air temperature fluctuates between +23°С…+26°С. At night, the thermometer does not fall below +14°C. However, the weather in August is already less stable. There may be a sharp temperature drop when the heat is replaced by coolness. This month, up to 51 mm of precipitation falls, but only one rainy day is recorded. Humidity reaches 80%. It is almost calm outside (2-3 m/s).

September

In September in Hungary, the daytime thermometer readings can reach +21°С…+23°С. It is already cool at night, +11°C. There are fogs this month. Humidity is fixed within 60-70%. The maximum wind gusts are 5 m/s. The number of hours of sunshine is gradually decreasing.

October

The most comfortable weather in October is in the Balaton area. The average air temperature fluctuates between +15°С…+17°С. At night, the thermometer drops to +5°С…+6°С. The approaching cold is already felt. Fogs and rains are a frequent occurrence in October in Hungary. Humidity can reach up to 100%. The wind is blowing from the northwest, gusts are up to 9 m/s.

November

The average air temperature in November during the day is within +5°С…+7°С. And in the dark, the thermometer drops to +1°C. The water temperature barely reaches +15°C. Most precipitation falls in the region of the Bakony mountain system. The average wind speed is 4 m/s, the humidity is rather high. Such weather conditions make the cold more palpable.

December

The average daytime temperature ranges from +2°С to +3°С. Frosts are already possible at night, -2 ° С. The monthly rainfall is 40 mm. For Hungary, a snowy winter is not typical, however, due to sub-zero temperatures, the snow that has fallen may not melt for a long time.
