CLIMATE

Armenia is the most ancient state of Transcaucasia. The country has no access to the sea and covers an area of about 30 thousand km2. Neighbor states: Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iran and Georgia.

Mountain ranges (about 47%), extinct volcanoes, intermountain basins, plateaus and plains are the main components of the country’s relief. The highest peak in Armenia is Mount Aragats (4090 m). There is a freshwater lake Sevan in Armenia with an area of 1240 km 2 and a depth of 83 m. The lake is fed by precipitation, as well as 28 rivers that flow into it. The natural national park “Sevan” has healing air and the beauty of the surroundings, and the lake itself is home to trout, sturgeon and crayfish.
Armenia is located in the subtropical zone, but such a climate is present only in the southern territory of the country. Alpine and continental climate prevails in the rest of the territory of Armenia. The summer months here are dry and sunny, while the winter months are cold, with frequent snowfalls. Weather in Armenia in January

On average, the temperature of the air masses in the flat part of the country is kept at +1°C, dropping to -3°C at night, and in the mountains it can drop to a maximum of -15°C. The average amount of precipitation in Armenia is 15 mm, which falls during 9 rainy days. In Lake Sevan, the average water temperature is +1°C.

The highest temperature was recorded in Yerevan (+4°C), and the lowest in the mountainous regions (-3°C…-10°C). For 8 days of snow and rain, which are sometimes accompanied by hail or thunderstorms, up to 25 mm of precipitation falls in the country. The water temperature in Lake Sevan repeats the figure for January.

The water in Lake Sevan warms up to +4°C.

The rainy season in Armenia falls on spring – early summer. In May, the level of precipitation increases to 70 mm in the northeast, and up to 140 mm in the southwest of the country. On the flat part, daytime temperatures fluctuate between +16°C…+23°C, and +8°C at night. At the foot of the mountains, the daily air temperature will be +13°C…+14°C. In Lake Sevan, the water warms up to +8°C during the day.

The rainy season is coming to an end. In the north-east of the country (Dilijan, Sevan), precipitation is again expected to be twice as much as in the south-west (Yerevan, Jermuk) – 65 mm and 130 mm, respectively. In areas far from the mountains, during the day the temperature is +22°C…+29°C. At night the air cools down to +12°C. At the foot of the mountains, air masses warm up to + 18 ° C during the day, but snow can lie on the tops of high mountains.

July is the hottest month of the year in Armenia. In Dilijan and Tsakhkadzor, the air will warm up to +22°C during the day, and drop to +16°C at night. The highest daily temperature is expected in Yerevan, with +32°C. During 4 rainy days with thunderstorms, about 30-50 mm of precipitation falls. The average daily water temperature in Lake Sevan is +17°C.

Daytime temperatures throughout the country range from +22°C in the northeast to +32°C in the southwest. High temperatures are easier to bear due to the light wind. Nights bring long-awaited coolness and a temperature indicator of +15°C. In the last summer month, you should not expect a lot of precipitation, perhaps there will be only 1-2 rainy days. During the year, the highest water temperature in Lake Sevan is observed in August (+20°C).

The air temperature on the last day of the month persistently reminds of the imminent approach of winter. The daytime temperature of the flat part of the country is +6°C…+12°C, and at night it drops and reaches -1°C. At the foot of the mountains, the daily maximum temperature is +3°C. The average amount of precipitation in November is 35 mm, which will fall over 7 rainy days, fog, hail and thunderstorms are also possible. In Sevan, the water warms up to +7°C on average.

Weather in Armenia in December

In the first month of winter, fogs, rain, thunderstorms, snow are expected. During the day, the air on the flat territory of the country fluctuates around 0°C… + 7°C. Ski resorts greet their guests with excellent snow coverage of slopes. In Tsaghkadzor and other mountainous regions of the country, the daytime air temperature is -3°C, and after sunset it reaches -10°C. Lake Sevan cools down to +3°C on average.
