CLIMATE

Seychelles is an archipelago of over 100 islands in East Africa scattered in the Indian Ocean. The total land area of the islands is 457 km2. The capital is Victoria.

The islands are divided into two types. The inner islands are about 243 km2 (or 54%) and 98% of the total population lives here. The inner islands are the peaks of the underwater Mascarene plateau. They rise majestically from the water and form mountains and hills that rise above 940 meters above sea level. They are a mixture of rocks, boulders and some fertile land suitable for agricultural purposes. Unlike the rocky formation of the Inner Islands, the Outer Islands are coral islands. They rise only a few meters above sea level and are commonly referred to as the Coral Outer Islands. The outer islands make up the remaining 46% of the Seychelles and only a few are inhabited. Their total area is about 211 km2. Less than 2% of the total population lives on these small outer islands.

The Seychelles has a tropical climate, hot all year round. The rainy season is from December to March, due to the northwest monsoon, and the dry and slightly cool season is from June to September, when the southeast trade winds prevail. However, even during the dry season, it sometimes rains. Daily and annual temperature fluctuations are negligible and temperatures rarely exceed 32°C during the day or fall below +20°C at night.

Tropical rains occur more often in the evening or at night, but during the rainy season, cloudiness is frequent even during the day. To learn more about the climate and choose the best time to travel to the Seychelles, the monthly weather calendar will help.
