Location and History
Sheyenne is located in the northeastern part of Eddy County. Founded in 1883, the city derives its name from the nearby Sheyenne River, which was named after the Cheyenne Indians. The first explorers in the area misspelled the name, thus changing the “C” to an “S”. The arrival of the railroad in 1885 spurred its development, transforming it into a local center for commerce and agriculture. Over the years, Sheyenne has maintained its small-town charm, with a rich history connected to the expansion of the railway and agriculture in the region.
