Virginia – The virgin Queen Elisabeth was the godfather of the name. The approximately 5 million inhabitant state describes itself as “Old Dominion”. It was explored by Sir Walter Raleigh and was founded in 1607 by the English settlers Jamestown. The decisive battle of the American War of Independence took place in Yorktown. Virginia became the 10th state to join the Union. The capital is Richmond. The main products are tobacco and fruit.
