New Jersey – Is named after the English channel island of Jersey and is relatively densely populated with approximately 7.3 million inhabitants. This state is also known as the “Garden State”. The capital is Trenton. The Spanish conqueror Verrazano was the first to explore the state in 1524, followed by Henry Hudson in 1609. New Jersey was the scene of over 100 battles during the Revolutionary War. Already in 1787 it joined the USA as the 3rd state. The main attraction is the Atlantic City gaming paradise, the largest in the United States alongside Las Vegas. Grover Cleveland and Woodrow Wilson, both former US presidents, are the outstanding historical figures of the state alongside Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Paine (author of the Common Sense 1776).
