São Tomé and Príncipe is a republic formed by two islands in the Gulf of Guinea. An old Portuguese colony. It has great historical and cultural heritage, as well as beautiful beaches and resorts. The capital is São Tomé and the official language is Portuguese. The country’s capital is on the coast, in the northeast of São Tomé Island. It is the largest city, main port, economic and cultural center in the country. It has about 56 thousand residents and many historic buildings. In 1534, the Diocese was established and, in the following year, São Tomé was elevated to city status. In 1753, the capital was transferred to Santo Antônio do Príncipe, but returned in 1852. The 16th century São Sebastião Fortress houses the National Museum.
