Fiji is a country and archipelago in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean. It has about 300 islands and 540 islets and atolls of volcanic origin, spread over an area of 3 million km². Only about 110 islands are inhabited by 926 thousand residents (2018). The capital is Suva, on the island of Viti Levu. Brief history: In 1643, the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman landed in the Fiji archipelago. He was the first European to arrive in the region. In 1774, the English navigator James Cook sailed close to the archipelago. In 1874, the United Kingdom raised the territory to colony status. Independence was achieved in 1970, almost a century later. The Fiji Islands are a tropical paradise with beautiful beaches. Its clear waters and coral reefs are ideal for diving.
