Antigua and Barbuda is located in the Lower Antilles region of the Caribbean. It has been an independent country since 1981, governed by a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. The population is 94 thousand residents (2016). The country’s economy is based mainly on the sugar cane industry, tourism and small manufactures. Antigua, the most populous island, has a semi-arid climate and lowlands. Saint John’s, the capital, is on the northwest coast, next to one of Antigua’s many natural ports. More than half of the country’s population lives in the area around the capital. In September 2017, Hurricane Irma destroyed much of Barbuda Island.
